Did you know that one out of seven drivers on the road are driving without insurance?  And to make things worse, two out of seven drivers are only carrying state minimum requirements for liability insurance.  Which means nearly half of all drivers on the road either have no insurance coverage or very little.  In this article I will share with you the importance of UM/UIM coverage also known as uninsured motorist and underinsured motorist coverage.

3NC UM/UIM Insurance out of 7 drivers on the road today are putting you at risk!

Your auto insurance policy provides various coverages including:

  • Liability coverage-this protects you when you’re at fault in an automobile accident and injured someone else or caused property damage.
  • Coverage for damage to your own car-also known as comprehensive and collision coverage.
  • Medical payments coverage-pays for medical expenses for you and other passengers in your auto as a result from an accident.

So what happens if you’re involved in an accident and the other driver is at fault and carrying no liability insurance or has low liability limits?

The bad news is you will likely have to pay out of your own pocket for the damages to your car and the medical expenses for anyone injured in your car.

The good news is you can add uninsured motorist and underinsured motorist coverage to your auto insurance policy at very little cost.

  • Uninsured motorist coverage-this pays for bodily injury and property damage caused by an uninsured driver or hit and run driver.

North Carolina auto insurance state minimum liability limits: $30,000/$60,000/$25,000

The state of North Carolina requires licensed drivers to carry a minimum of $30,000 per person for bodily injury, $60,000 per occurrence and $25,000 for property damage.

  • Underinsured motorist coverage-this pays for bodily injury and property damage in excess of the coverage limits of an underinsured driver.

So what UM/UIM coverage limits should you carry?  Everyone has different needs so give us a call and less discuss your specific needs.
