PursuitWhen you think of The Fourth of July, you may think of hotdogs, fireworks, and family celebrations; however, too often the fireworks are not the celebratory kind.  They are the kind that blow up as a result of drinking and driving.  This holiday is right around the corner, so make sure while you are celebrating our country with family and friends on this 4th of July, that you drive sober or get pulled over!

Facts for the Fourth

Some of the statistics surrounding one of America’s favorite holidays is astounding!  Being aware of these facts may make you seriously think before you get behind the wheel of a car after consuming alcohol. Below is a list of some facts to be taken VERY SERIOUSLY!

  • In North Carolina, if you are driving with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 grams per deciliter (or higher), then you are legally considered “drunk.”
  • From 2009-2013, nearly 40 percent of ALL traffic fatalities over the Fourth of July occurred in alcohol-impaired driving crashes.
  • In 2013, Forbes magazine
named the Independence Day holiday “the most dangerous holiday of the year.”
  • During the July Fourth period of 2013, 39 percent of all crash fatalities involved alcohol-impaired drivers.
  • During the July Fourth weekend of 2013, more than 21 percent of drivers causing fatalities had BACs of .15 or higher, which is almost twice the legal limit.

Don’t become a statistic!  Driving while intoxicated can lead to serious consequences, can endanger your life as well as others, and you could end up in jail!

A Blue Light Special?

Flashing blue lights are NEVER special when you make the poor decision to drink and drive!  This 4th of July, police and highway patrol will be heavily patrolling our streets and highways to promote safety for ALL!  If you are caught driving drunk, the law enforcement won’t mess around and you WILL get arrested and may end up in jail! An average DUI arrest could cost you as much as $10,000!

Celebrate Independence by Staying Safe and Sober!

Celebrating Independence Day is a great thing for friends and families; however, it is important that if you are a parent of teenage drivers that you advise them of the dangers of drinking and driving. For those who are of legal age to drink, be responsible.  It sounds simple and can be if you follow the tips outlined below:

  • Plan a safe way home before the fun begins. (Ex: designated driver)
  • If you’re impaired, use a taxi, call a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation.
  • If you happen to see a drunk driver on the road, don’t hesitate to contact law enforcement.
  • If you know someone who is about to drive while impaired, take their keys and help make other arrangements for their transportation.

Make sure the only fireworks you experience this 4th of July are the ones in the sky while you and your family and friends are celebrating!  Wishing you and your family a fun-filled and safe Fourth!
